“That Which Stays” p. 6
March 12, Istanbul
A little girl is sitting behind a window. She looks like she has something important in mind. She looks sad. I smile at her as I pass by. She does not respond. She continues to look away.

March 27, Istanbul
And as I observe, record, and interpret this time and place, I think of the concealed inner lives we all protect behind layers of similar clothes, haircuts, makeup and conventional social behavior.

April 12, Istanbul
A bird flies right in front of a woman’s face. She smiles, delighted. This reminds me of my friend David back in the States. We were sitting outside and a bird came flying close. He said: “That bird is gonna shit on my head.” And sure enough…

“Scattered Pages” p.3
July 12, Athens
I wander around familiar places looking for those scattered pieces of myself I left behind, trying once again to reconnect them. Instead, I am confronted with images I don’t recognize and see the pieces of other people’s lives scattered on sidewalks. Some beg for help. The tourists look surprised.
“Scattered Pages” p. 8
Aug 3, Athens
It’s a 105 degrees. Athens is burning. I am drenched in sweat. I buy two bottles of water, drink the first, and throw the other all over me. Then I wander around the National Garden. It’s a welcoming oasis. I sit on a bench and leave the heat behind.
“Scattered Pages” p. 12
August 12, Athens
The taxi driver is a feast for the eyes. I watch him through my dark shades as he talks on his cell phone. Before ending the conversation, he leans closer to the phone and whispers: «Σ’ αγαπω πολύ» (“I love you very much”). It’s been so long since I heard these words in my language… The heat of his voice has melted the heat of the afternoon. And just like that, I feel good again.

Below: “The Books I’d Write” Series of 34
When I was a child, I had two dreams; I wanted to be an artist, and I wanted to be a novelist. I had no doubt I could do it. Back then, I believed everything was possible. Occasionally, my grandmother would look at me and say: "Remember - you can't put two watermelons under the same arm..." But I was determined. So, I set out to prove her wrong. Increasingly, as I grew older, the limitations of time became obvious to me. There always seemed to be so much to do and so little time! I am now an artist, a mother, a teacher, with the zillions of other things that make up the reality of our everyday life. "The Books I'd Write" are many scattered pages and a few collections of poems. Eventually, pressured once again by a perpetual lack of time, I felt the need to do something about the books inside me to relieve me, at least partially, of their weight. So, I started making them.
